Okay, so a synaptonemal complex forms between two homologous chromosomes in meiosis. Basically, it lets two verrrry similar chromosomes exchange genetic material for variation, which allows you and me to be different, and change genes! Sort of.
(Basically it's like they each got a tattoo.)
